Thanks to Tracy Weinrich for the inspiring display she created to honor Black History Month! Students sought out many of these books as soon as they entered the library.

Dear HMS Families,

It’s hard to believe that our eighth grade students have started their transition activities to prepare for high school! We extend our gratitude to the eighth grade team, the ninth grade teachers, and YHS guidance counselors and administrators for all of their help and support with this process. We look forward to honoring our students in the spring for all they have accomplished during their middle school years!

In other news, HMS students have welcomed the opportunity to safely participate in robotics, intramurals, basketball, Nordic skiing and Alpine skiing, along with a variety of virtual activities like our Civil Rights Team, Speech and Debate, Chess Club, Yearbook, and Writing Club. We appreciate our students’ vigilance about health and safety, and the essential work of our advisors and coaches, which makes these activities possible!

Thank you for taking some time to review the updates below, which include our recent adventures in learning.

Joan Adler and Tom McDowell,

Dismissal Process

We need your support to ensure our students’ safety during dismissal. We dismiss students in waves by grade levels. The process includes students in grades 5 - 8 who are taking the bus, riding bikes, walking, and getting a ride home. It is important that students follow this process and avoid running up to the parking lot while busses and cars are making their way around the circle and students riding bikes are headed off campus. Your child will meet you in the upper lot or in front of HMS at the end of this process. Thanks for your help with this.

5/6 Math Team News

In the math team competition last week, our fabulous fifth graders came in third place. They were just four points out of second place. High scorer for the team with 33 points was Lilah Connor. Lilah placed third out of about 75 mathletes from 12 schools! The sixth grade team finished in fifth place. Congratulations to the students and all students on these teams, and to Coach Gross and Mr. Harrington for their support of the mathletes!

7/8 Math Team News 
Thanks to Mr. Harrington and Mr. Rice for sharing this update: Last week, HMS took part in our second virtual math meet of the year (or ever for that matter!). Both the 7th and 8th grade teams represented HMS well. Competing against teams from all over southern Maine, the 7th grade team finished sixth overall, and Finn Marianski had the fifth highest individual score. The 8th grade team finished third overall and had two team members with individual scores in the top five: Mathieu Charrette with the fifth highest score, and Ethan Tyau, who tied for the highest score of the day! Congrats to all participants! We are so thankful for the work of the Southern Maine Math League to make this opportunity available to students in Maine this year.

Planned Family Absence Form
Please have your students complete and return the attached Planned Family Absence Form before leaving for travel of any kind. This is an important part of our health and safety protocols. Thank you!
