Students measuring rockweed

October 13, 2023

Dear HMS Parents and Guardians,

Despite the superstition around Friday the 13th, we had a wonderful day here at HMS!  Students have been engaged in a variety of learning activities both on campus and in our local community.  Pictured above are members of our 7th grade investigating rockweed growth at Madeleine Point.  Students’ research is shared with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.  Our 7th graders will venture to Madeleine Point again in the spring to gather more data.

Emergency Procedures

In December of last year, all Yarmouth School Department schools shifted emergency procedures.  As Superintendent Dolloff shared in his message to the Yarmouth Schools community on December 15, 2022, “YSD staff has been working with local first responders to update the emergency response protocols in our schools – specifically those that drive our response to a highly critical situation such as an intruder in our schools.”  This includes more active responses, emphasizing evacuation as a first option, if possible. We will continue to practice these emergency procedures this year, starting with table-top discussions.  All students at HMS will engage in a table-top discussion on Tuesday, October 24 during an extended advisory period.  The activity will include a review of active responses to a highly critical situation and then a discussion of different scenarios.  Our next emergency procedure drills will be in January and March, and you will receive communication prior to both. Please reach out to us with any questions.
