Dear Parents,

We are closed on Tuesday in celebration of Veterans' Day. We are moving quickly into November, the leaves are relentlessly falling, the days and nights are becoming cooler, and we can begin anticipating snow and possibly snow days. We may use Delayed Start as opposed to having no school on a snow day. If we use Delayed Start, school will begin at 9:40 - a two-hour delay - and end at 2:25, the usual end of the day.

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress): In September and May all students take the NWEA MAP in mathematics and reading.  The assessment in the fall provides teachers with a baseline for student performance.  Re-assessing in the spring measures student progress/academic growth. The latest results from this fall are available on PowerSchool.

HMS Blog: HMS News (Blog) is another great source of information with text and pictures.  HMS Newsletter (Blog) address: http://hmsnewsletter.blogspot.com/

Winter Kids: For all Maine 5th, 6th and 7th Graders - See how much fun winter can be! Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, tubing and more. Try them all with a WinterKids Passport. WinterKids helps kids develop healthy, lifelong habits through fun, outdoor winter activity. Apply on line at WinterKids.org or pick up an application at school.

HMS Civil Rights Team: The HMS Civil Rights Team attended the Civil Rights Team Project Middle School Student Training on October 28. The theme was, "All students should feel safe, welcome, and respected in school." The day consisted of several activities: 1) Identity Inventory: What are some of the more important pieces and parts of your identity - the things that are important in terms of understanding/knowing you - the things that make you YOU. 2) Bias Behaviors: What are some things that might happen in school that would make it so that students did not feel safe, welcome, or respected based on their (or their love ones) Race and skin color, Religion, Gender, National origin and ancestry, Disabilities, and Sexual orientation. 3) Learning Gender: People think that girls/women are supposed to be...People think that boys/men are supposed to be...and Unlearning Gender: Ways that YOU show that these things aren't always true. and, 4) What do you notice in these ads? The HMS Civil Rights Team will plan several activities this year with the theme of feeling safe, welcome, and respected in school, because, unfortunately things happen so that not all students feel this way.

Lost and Found: Due to the recent cool mornings and warm afternoons that we have been experiencing,  MANY coats, jackets and sweatshirts have been left out on the playground and soccer fields. Please look through the huge piles of items that have accumulated on the TWO tables in the main lobby of the school. We do reunite students with clothing that has their name on it.

Yarmouth Music Boosters: The Portland Jazz Orchestra (PJO) will be performing Duke Ellington's Jazz Nutcracker and other holiday favorites at YPAC on Sunday, December 7 @ 3pm.  Doors will open at 2:30pm.  Tickets are $10.00 at the door.  The concert will be approximately 2 hours with an intermission.  Refreshments will be available. The PJO is anchored by PJO Jazz Drummer and HMS Teacher extraordinaire Brad Ciechomski!  Students, parents, faculty and family are invited.

Communication Survey: If you tried to open the Communication Survey results in Safari from the previous At-A-Glance, it would not open because of a temporary problem with Safari and the google doc. Please find the Survey results attached.

Fund Raiser: For parents who ordered cookie dough, we expect the delivery on Wednesday, November 19. When the date is confirmed we will let students and parents know the pick-up day and time. Thank you for the support; we continue to have coupon booklets available in the office.
