October 21, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians-

We are excited to fill you in on our school’s first ever, “Day of Welcome", which will be recognized by our HMS Civil Rights Team, and CRTs statewide, on Friday, October 25, 2019. We are always focused on our culture of inclusion, acceptance, and how we welcome people into our learning community. The Day of Welcome will enable us to underscore and highlight these essential messages.

This event is sponsored by the Maine Office of the Attorney General through the Civil Rights Team Project, which supports our work of engaging the school community to reflect on and discuss all issues related to civil rights.

We will begin the day outside, first thing in the morning, to greet everyone who enters our school. Our Civil Rights team is working on banners and signs that communicate “welcome” in many different languages and visuals, including sign language.

The Day of Welcome promotes the idea that everyone is welcome in our school communities, which are safe places for us to learn about our similarities and differences, and celebrate our diversity! Please join us in spreading this message by talking with your child(ren) about the ideas behind The Day of Welcome.

 Thanks very much-

The HMS Civil Rights Team and advisors Laura Mike and Charlotte Agell
